Whether it’s to attain longer length or to maintain healthy hair, many of us have hair goals. And if this is the case, then hair supplements aren’t anything new to you. From Hairfinity to good ol’ biotin, you’ve more than likely researched your fair share of supplements and walked away wondering, ‘will this even work?’ With promises of long, luscious locks but with a hefty price tag there are a few things you should know before breaking the bank on hair supplements. Read on to find out if hair supplements are really worth the hype.

The average person’s hair typically grows ¼ to ½ inches per month, however with supplements users have boasted of up to ¾ inches of growth per month. One of the main ingredients in hair supplements is biotin, a water-soluble B-complex vitamin, also known as vitamin H or B7. Biotin is naturally produced in our bodies and available in a number of food sources including eggs, nuts, whole grains, cauliflower, and mushrooms.

Interestingly, many clinical studies have been conducted such as the one by the University of Maryland Medical Center that states ‘very weak evidence suggests that biotin supplements may improve thin, splitting, or brittle toe and fingernails, as well as hair.’ And although biotin is a safe and nontoxic vitamin, it has a few concerning side effects, including acne and ironically, hair shedding.

As with anything, try hair supplements to see how they work for you and your body. Everyone’s hair is different and what may work for you, may not work for someone else. The important thing to remember is to balance a healthy hair care regimen with a clean diet to attain long, healthy strands and use any hair supplements as an aid and not the only means for your hair goals.
